What's Your "And"?

John Garrett’s research involves talking with professionals who realize that who you are is so much more than what you do. Accountants, consultants, lawyers, engineers, and other professionals everywhere are doing hobbies and passions after they leave the office. We discuss why these outside-of-work interests matter and how they've impacted their career.

Chris Hooper took the roundabout way into accounting -- from wrestling promoter at the age of 13 to power lifting competitor to entrepreneur. He'd always been good at making money, but never good at keeping it, so he figured he needed to study up on accounting. And the rest is history. While he isn't competing anymore, he still lifts regularly, sometimes even with clients.

In this episode, we talk about how Chris works hard to make Accodex a refuge for really good accountants who also have passions outside the office. While this might be frowned upon at larger firms, he embraces and encourages it. He stays in constant contact with all the staff but also schedules quarterly meetings with every individual. His goal is to have short-term productivity but long-term engagement from his team, so he works hard to align their personal goals with those of the firm. The question that he asks everyone is, "What's your dream job and what can we do for you to help you get there?"

Jennie Moore has been figure skating since she was very little. It's something almost everyone does growing up in Canada. Even today, she continues to perform in competitions and can be found practising at the skating rink alongside her children. She doesn't want to brag but she's gotten very good at lacing up skates for a whole row of kids.

In this episode, we talk about how much figure skating has impacted her business career. From self-correcting to being able to accept coaching to listening well, she has always remembered that it truly takes a team to become great. She also feels that sharing her figure skating with coworkers -- even scheduling meetings around practice -- has lead to more engagement and has helped her firm blossom. She says, "People want to know you're human. If you care about their personal lives then they realize you care about them as a person."

David Beasley loves music. So much so that he spent several years composing for and performing in the United States Air Force Heartland of America Band near Omaha, NE. And even though he no longer lives near there, he continues to compose music for the Omaha Symphony.

In this episode, we talk about how David's been able to create connections with coworkers through their hobbies or passions. This helps out when times are tough or he needs to correct someone's work because their relationships are based on more than just work so the criticism isn't taken personally. David also points out that we're all working in order to do something else, whether that's supporting our family or to be able to do our passions more. In the end, he says, "What's the harm in sharing? There is actually no risk and a lot of reward."

When Tyler Crawford and AJ VanderWoude started at BMSS a few years ago, little did they know they’d be creating original rap videos – the latest being CPA’s on Fleek. What started out as a fun way to learn about upcoming audits has now turned into an amazing way to create strong relationships with their clients.

In this episode, we talk about how their firm, BMSS, works to find the person behind the accountant. They encourage each individual to explore those talents and then use them to better their career, which in turn benefits the firm. Wouldn’t it be great if everyone operated with this mentality?
