What's Your "And"?

John Garrett’s research involves talking with professionals who realize that who you are is so much more than what you do. Accountants, consultants, lawyers, engineers, and other professionals everywhere are doing hobbies and passions after they leave the office. We discuss why these outside-of-work interests matter and how they've impacted their career.

Jim Bourke started collecting baseball cards as a kid and now has every Topps baseball card except one – Mickey Mantle’s 1952 rookie card #311. He says he’ll be buying it the day after his last child graduates college. He grew up outside of New York City and was fortunate enough to attend many Yankees games growing up, which fueled his passion for baseball cards. Now, he also goes to the All-Star Game every year and coached his son’s Little League teams.

In this episode, Jim and I talk about how passion for something, no matter what it is, makes you stand out. He tells young accountants that he mentors, “Find something that’s yours and take it to the next level.” He learned early on in his career that in order to be successful, it was necessary to develop both his personal and professional lives. He’s also known for creating experiences for those around him, whether that’s taking staff someone unique while they’re out of town on a client visit or it’s sitting in the front row with clients at Yankees games and taking pictures with some of the players.

Chris McCabe has been playing both hockey and lacrosse since he was young. He had an older brother who also played, so he helped mentor Chris. Later, he attended the University of Vermont, becoming the captain of the Men’s Lacrosse team and later named to the 40th Anniversary Lacrosse team at UVM. Chris went on to play professionally for the Boston Blazers of the National Lacrosse League (NLL) and was inducted into the University of Vermont Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002.

In this episode, Chris and I talk about how his playing sports gives him the strength and perspective to have a successful career. He finds that making a connection with others in the office makes a huge difference. He says, “It’s this inherent interest we have in one another that makes it a nice experience when we come to work.”

Hannah Horton had owned a fiddle since she was young but could never find somewhere to take lessons. Then she moved to Nashville, started working at LBMC and was staffed on a client with Abby Parsons. One day it came up that Abby also had always wanted to try to learn to play, so they decided to sign up for lessons. Not only did this give them a reason to look forward to Saturdays during busy season, but it helped them in ways they couldn’t have imagined.

In this episode, Hannah, Abby, and I talk about how their fiddle lessons have opened up a lot of conversations in the office, allowing them to develop relationships with people in different service lines and even in different offices. They say, “It’s a fun, positive thing to talk about… a morale booster.” This made many people realize they needed to find hobbies as well.

Darcy Boerio always enjoyed running, especially when her son was a baby and could be pushed in a jogging stroller. But once he was too old for that, Darcy struggled to find a fitness activity they could both do together. She was talking with a friend who did karate with her daughter and thought that it wouldn’t hurt to go. With her friend as an accountability, Darcy and her son have made it a regular thing.

In this episode, Darcy and I talk about how she had been reluctant to talk about this with others in the past because she didn’t think it would matter. But she’s since found that, “It’s a good long-term benefit to get to know your coworkers.” Since most of her team now works remotely, it’s even more important make the effort to create those connections.

Mark Winburn had always played musical instruments but it never occurred to him to try singing until he was at a Young Life meeting. Then he started with his college choir and later became a member of his church choir. But then work began taking more of his time, so he put his singing passion on the shelf for a few years. What work took away, it gave back, when his work party had karaoke, giving him the opportunity to rekindle his passion. And now he’s a finalist in Houston’s Pride Superstar competition!

In this episode, Mark and I talk about how his singing competitions have allowed him to create a positive spirit of camaraderie with others in his firm. He’s been so moved by the support he’s gotten at his performances, seeing several of them in the audience. Mark says, “For me, singing is me breathing in happy.” He’s very cognizant of others needing to find and share their interests as well, so he’s careful not to schedule things that will interfere with this.
