What's Your "And"?

John Garrett’s research involves talking with professionals who realize that who you are is so much more than what you do. Accountants, consultants, lawyers, engineers, and other professionals everywhere are doing hobbies and passions after they leave the office. We discuss why these outside-of-work interests matter and how they've impacted their career.

Bill Jones began exercising about 15 years ago when he weighed 300 lbs. A coworker mentioned that he was going to the YMCA one day, invited Bill, and that’s when he began walking the track. After just six months, he had already lost 80 lbs and was encouraged to keep the momentum going, so he signed up to run the BolderBoulder 10k. Since then, he’s completed 4 Ironman triathlons and 16 marathons!

In this episode, Bill and I talk about him being so focused on work instead of himself is what led to him being 300 lbs. But he was able to overcome that by doing what many thought was not possible. Now he schedules runs during the week, sometime even during the day if he’s going to have to stay late during busy season. He also encourages everyone to find what gives them that release from work and talk about it with others in the office. “Share your passion. People will support you in ways you never imagined.”

Blake Oliver started playing the cello when he was young and eventually became a member of the San Francisco Youth Symphony. As a music major at Northwestern University, he was chosen to attend the prestigious Meadowmount School of Music and participate in the Aspen Music Festival. Although he learned that he didn’t care for the life of a professional musician, he now attends concerts regularly and stays in contact with many of his musician friends.

In this episode, Blake and I talk about how he promised himself never to hide any part of himself when he made the decision to go into accounting. He believes that “People are crying out for authenticity in this world. They want to work with people who are who they seem to be.” It’s his music background that gives him the ability to look at a problem and approach it in a new way. As the accounting profession continues to become more automated, it’s the more creative people that are being attracted to make a difference.

Marc Hendrikson and his wife adopted their first daughter from Guatemala. Since then, they’ve adopted three more children and fostered countless others. This provided a fresh perspective on things because when he would come home after work, suddenly all of his stresses paled in comparison to their needs.

In this episode, Marc and I talk about how he has never really conformed to the stereotypical accountant model, from getting his college degree when he was a little older to being an open book with his coworkers and clients. He found that the more he shared with clients, the more he cared about them personally. And he saw that “clients who are focused on more things than just making money are more successful because they’re well-rounded people.”

Mark Wickersham started cycling in his early 20’s after a friend lent him a bicycle. He had grown up orienteering but experienced some knee problems in his late teens, so cycling was a nice alternative to feed his addiction to exercise. He soon bought his own bicycle and joined a cycling club for accountability. Since then, he’s ridden across northern France, and done some of the Tour de France sections of the Alps and Pyrenees.

In this episode, Mark and I talk about how cycling is a “significant part of my business because that’s where I do my best thinking.” He’s able to switch off from work and allow thoughts to come to him. This wasn’t always the case but as Mark’s career progressed and he started his own firm, he began to realize how important cycling was to his business. So much so that he got more confident in sharing it with potential clients and even bringing his bike on stage with him when he speaks.
