Hayden Nilson was part of a high school state championship hockey team, which is really saying something considering he grew up in Alaska. He continues to play goalie about once a week, but has moved on to coaching and being on the Board of Directors for his old Youth Hockey League.
In this episode, Hayden and I talk about how playing goalie in hockey requires a certain attitude and confidence which translates directly to standing out in the business world. He hasn’t been afraid to get very involved at both his firm and with the Alaska Society of Certified Public Accountants, both of which have benefited his career. He encourages others to have confidence in yourself – and not just in your technical abilities – in order to get ahead.

Mathew Heggem started dancing as a child after realizing he wasn’t a good enough singer for the lead parts in the local children’s theater musicals. It was during an inspired performance as The Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland that someone who ran a dance studio offered him some free lessons. He continued to dance through high school and later would get into choreography as well.
In this episode, Mathew and I talk about his arts side allows him to view business through a different lens. He likes to look at it as he’s participating in acts of creation both in the office and on stage. It was when he realized that both dance and business grow from ideas created by a person, he began to flourish in both worlds. He even went so far as to say, “It’s when I separate the two that things get worse."

Dr. Sean Stein Smith started playing the drums when he was 8 years old because they provide the driving force for all of music. He was a member of his high school marching band and later his college’s pep band. Since graduating from college, he’s continued to play his Pearl Export drum set in the pit orchestra for shows, as well as on the stage during a cabaret musical.
In this episode, Sean and I talk about how his drumming has allowed him to have the mindset to analyze the bigger picture and understand how you fit in. By combining our out of work identity with our work identity, it adds depth to each one of us which develops trust. These layers to each one of us make us more approachable and more real. It’s important for firms to be open to realizing that their staff are people, and it’s healthy and natural for them to passions outside of work and to talk about them when they’re with coworkers and clients.

Tom Schneider was named the World Series of Poker Player of the Year in 2007. He learned how to play from his mother when he was young, where he quickly learned how to read people actions and how they’re motivated. He also happened to teach himself how to play the guitar at the age of 51, so now he writes and sings country music in his spare time.
In this episode, Tom and I talk about how playing poker helped him learn how to calculate expected values and to process the game, all of which helps him be a better CFO. He started the singing/songwriting passion because he wanted to be on “America’s Got Talent”. While that never happened, he’s gone on to write 30 songs. He’s found that his coworkers at LoudMouth Golf really appreciate this talent and he’s created stronger bonds because of this. He believes that having something outside of work is crucial, so when he meets new team members, he is quick to ask them “what do you love to do outside of work?” because “that’s what really drives them.”

Scott Hoppe got into cycling when he was a student at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. He bought an $800 bike and began riding it everywhere he went as a way to exercise and lose some weight. This eventually led to him entering both crit races, which are shorter, “crash happy” tight circles, and road races, which are much longer distances. He finished in 6th Place in the most difficult road race he’s competed in was in Boonfield, CA, a very mountainous part of the Pacific Coast Highway. When he’s not racing, he’s been known to ride his bike to some CPE events and even across the Golden Gate Bridge to work.
In this episode, Scott and I talk about how his cycling allowed him to learn that his limits were greater than he thought. He can now see through the “hurt locker moments” in order to dig deeper and stay focused longer. Scott is big believer in finding common ground to develop stronger relationships. When he was with larger firms, he often started “biggest loser” challenges or Wednesday night runs. He feels that if you’re at a larger firm, you shouldn’t wait to ask for permission but rather take it on yourself to create the culture you want. "Don’t be scared of failure, so fail forward and fail fast."
