Tom Wheeland recently took some time away from work to hike with his wife to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. On one of the nights that they camped at the bottom, Tom took some time to look at all the stars he could see without any city light pollution. That’s when he realized, “Any time you can broaden your perspective on the world, you see both the significance -- and insignificance -- of what you do.”
In this episode, Tom and I talk about how this trip and his other passions of playing tennis and watching Notre Dame sports have allowed him to have other dimensions for him to talk about when meeting new people at work. He finds that it’s easier to relax and be himself, whether that’s in the office or on a client visit. This sets an example for others to see that, “The barriers that prevent you from deep relationships melt away if you’re being genuine.”

Carl Reader started lifting weights a few years ago as a way to stay healthy. He really enjoyed it because he was in control and there are always new goals to achieve when training. The weightlifting routine and principles of mindfulness have helped Carl learn to respond rather than react to business situations.
In this episode, Carl and I talk about how business isn’t B-to-B or even B-to-C, it’s all H-to-H (Human-to-Human), because people are still buying from other people. Because of this, Carl says, “My intention is to really get to know others because that’s where the magic happens.” He tries to treat all relationships the same by having the same persona, both in and out of work.

Mark Lee first got into magic as a way to impress the girls when he was in secondary school. He was good enough to soon begin entertaining at children’s parties by the age of 14 and later become a member of The Magic Circle. He thought this was what he wanted to do for a living until his parents introduced him to Arnie the Accountant, who helped Mark see that he would need to do 3 shows a day, everyday, in order to make a decent living. That’s when Mark decided that he would choose a career in accounting – but still continues to perform his magic, which people from his past, both from school and work, always remember him for.
In this episode, Mark and I talk about how “building relationships with clients is more important than it’s ever been.” He firmly believes that we must each find something of ourselves to share in order to stand out from the crowd, so others will remember you easier compared to other accountants they know. We also discuss how he shared this hobby with coworkers but regrets not doing so more with clients because he felt the pressure from professionalism.

A few years ago, Nick Nappo joined his brother for trivia night at a local restaurant. Now, he’s a member of the team that won the World Tavern Trivia Championship held in Atlantic City! He has always “known a whole lot about nothing” so he’s excited to be able to put that to good use to help his team. It started hanging out with friends during the week but soon turned into a team competing across the country.
In this episode, Nick and I talk about the parallels between his team at work and his team that won the championship – “Everybody brings something unique to the team. If you harness those passions and talents, you can maximize your effectiveness as a team.” At first, he was reluctant to share his passion for trivia with his coworkers but realized that this is what makes him unique. Now he has a whiteboard hanging outside his cubicle where he writes tough trivia questions for his coworkers to try to answer, creating a fun way to start conversations.

When Joel McKay worked as a Business and Litigation Consultant in Chicago, he never felt like it was the right fit for him. While he was interested in many things outside of work – like BMX bikes, road cycling, woodworking, snow skiing, and playing drums in a band – he really enjoyed tutoring students on Saturdays. He got into it through a friend and has never looked back, having left the consulting world for a grad school program in school counseling.
In this episode, Joel and I talk about his passions and interests outside of work has always allowed him to build strong connections with others. Instead of clients and colleagues, now he does this with students and their parents. He firmly believes that passions make life richer, adding, “I’m not good at my job if I’m not balanced.”
