Wesley Middleton was young when he learned that he could play the piano by ear. He began to play in church and even picked up the trumpet when he was in high school. Now he’s followed in his father’s footsteps and plays the organ in his church’s band. They have several YouTube videos that he will share with others in the office so they can all see his passion for music.
In this episode, Wesley and I talk about how his being in a band has made him a better leader at his firm. He’s learned to make sure that his instrument isn’t too overpowering, so the band can come together to build one sound – similar to his accounting firm coming together to have one voice to serve their clients. He also talks about how they try to get everyone in the firm to open up with how they have fun and where they go on vacation, because “there’s no question that everything we do outside the firm directly impacts how things are conducted inside the firm.”

Nina Kaufman was called to come back to her faith after her Grandfather passed away and she soon found herself chanting Torah as part of the service. This is difficult because it involves telling a story with music while understanding the text in two languages. She also runs at least one 5k a month with her husband, including the Midnight Run in New York City’s Central Park on New Year’s Eve.
In this episode, Nina and I talk about how her outside of work interests allow her to “clear the mechanism”, to borrow a quote from the movie “For the Love of the Game.” The performance aspect of chanting Torah has made her much more comfortable when speaking to large audiences. And her running has taught her to let go and realize that not everything needs to be so competitive. But the biggest impact is the way she’s now able to relate more with her clients. “My clients wanted to get to know me and hear more about the person behind the professional.”

Patrick Kmieciak started tutoring when he was in college after a friend said that he was going to do it. A friendly competition arose between the two to see who could do it fastest. Patrick ended up winning and he helped his first client go from failing at mid-terms to getting a C+ and being able to graduate. Patrick was even invited to her graduation party!
In this episode, Patrick and I talk about how his tutoring keeps everything fresh, so it helps him understand business better and directly helped him pass the CPA Exam with such a high score to get the Elijah Watt Sells Award. It also helps him understand how best to communicate with others. And whether he’s in the office or he’s tutoring students, he’s found that, “People like people with a personality and some sort of uniqueness about them.”

Josh Lance started making shiraz and zinfandel wines with a friend several years ago. He found that the process was very similar to accounting, in that the process is very detail-oriented and there’s a fair amount of math. Unfortunately, you can’t really taste the fruits of your labor for 1-2 years while the wine ferments. In the meantime, he realized he could home brew beer that had a much shorter wait time, so he began to explore that as well.
In this episode, Josh and I talk about how this passion allowed him to quickly develop a client niche. He’s as excited about their business as his clients are, so it makes going to work much more enjoyable. He also created his own firm four years ago with a group of other young parents who appreciate flexible schedules. Josh also feels that it’s important they have passions outside of work, adding, “While we might be good at it, we are all much more than just accountants!”

Andrew Logan started riding since he was 8 years old, when his father bought him a dirt bike. He took a break after a bad accident in his early 20’s but now rides his Harley Davidson motorcycle to work every day from May through December. This lead him to implement the dress code policy that anyone in the firm can wear jeans everyday they ride a motorcycle to work. In his free time, Andrew has gone on rides with clients and has even taken his bike on long road trips through Canada and the US.
In this episode, Andrew and I talk about how riding his motorcycle provides him with the best therapy he could get. His 25-minute commute in the morning allows him to get his mind right for work. Sometimes, he’ll even take his bike out during lunch to be able to clear his head and get a better perspective. Early in his career, he vowed never to be what everyone considered to be the “stereotypical accountant”, so he’s known to ride his 2011 Harley Fat Bob to client meetings. Andrew finds that “…it enhances the client relationship once they realize you’re not a one-dimensional type of person.” Now that he’s the managing partner, he’s able to make sure that the firm supports everyone’s passions, because he believes “…if firms will let people do the things they’re passionate about, they’ll get paid back in spades.”
